Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre participates in CO2-neutral pipe manufacturing initiative

Sustainability in manufacturing is becoming increasingly crucial for all industries. With its products and environmentally friendly processes, Poppe + Potthoff has long been trying to make a contribution to environmentally friendly production of steel pipes. This contribution is now to become even greater: The Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahlrohre e.V. has given the go-ahead for the association’s initiative “CARBON REDUCED TUBES & PIPES – On the way to CO2-neutral steel tubes”. As a member of the association, Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH is to pursue the goal of achieving the legally required climate neutrality by 2045 at the latest. In order to achieve this, strategies, concepts and measures are to be developed together with other members of the association to initially reduce CO2 emissions in steel pipe production and to produce CO2-neutral steel pipes in the future.

Through knowledge transfer, exchange of experience and joint action, the synergies arising in the initiative will be used to achieve climate neutrality as early as possible. By means of a voluntary declaration, the members have committed themselves to the common goal of a CO2-neutral steel pipe. The progress of the individual companies on the way to climate neutrality will be monitored in future by means of annual status reports in order to create the greatest possible commitment.

In addition to Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre, manufacturers of all major types of steel tubes are represented in the initiative, so seamless, cold and hot-finished steel tubes are represented as well as steel tubes welded from coils and cold-drawn precision steel tubes. In future, the members will be identified with their own label “CARBON REDUCED TUBES & PIPES – On the way to CO2-neutral steel tubes”. This label is to clearly indicate that the respective company has committed itself to promoting the production of CO2-neutral steel tubes in its own production.

As a first project, the initiative is currently creating superordinate Product Carbon Footprints (Master PCFs) for the various production processes. Using these master PCFs, hotspot analyses will be carried out in order to localise the main CO2 emission areas and derive potential for improvement. The initiative is technically supported by Green Navigation GmbH. The consulting and service company specialises in the creation of climate strategies and the calculation of carbon footprints.
